What Is Aircraft Turnaround?

Aircraft turnaround is the sequence of ground activities carried out between an aircraft's arrival on stand and its next departure. It covers disembarkation, offloading, cabin cleaning, servicing, fuelling, catering, loading, boarding and dispatch. Aircraft Turnaround Time (ATT) is measured from on-block to off-block, and the tasks are planned in parallel so the aircraft can meet its departure slot.

What Happens During a Turnaround?

  1. 01On-block. Marshalling onto the stand, chocks and cones in place, ground power connected, doors cleared.
  2. 02Disembarkation. Passengers leave via airbridge or steps; passengers requiring assistance are handled first or last depending on the procedure.
  3. 03Offload. Baggage, cargo and mail are offloaded and transported to reclaim, transfer or the cargo terminal.
  4. 04Servicing. Cabin cleaning, potable water, lavatory service, fuelling and catering run in parallel where safety rules allow.
  5. 05Load. Outbound baggage and cargo are loaded to the loading instruction and the load sheet is prepared.
  6. 06Boarding. Passengers board, final figures are confirmed, the load sheet is signed and the doors are closed.
  7. 07Off-block. Equipment is removed, pushback and engine start are coordinated, and the departure movement message is sent.

How Long Does an Aircraft Turnaround Take?

Turnaround time depends on aircraft size, sector length, passenger and cargo volumes, stand type and airport procedures, so published times are planning targets rather than fixed rules.

As a general industry guide, a narrow-body aircraft on a short-haul rotation is commonly planned in roughly 25 to 45 minutes, while a wide-body aircraft on a long-haul rotation typically requires several hours because of deep cleaning, larger fuel uplift, full catering replenishment and higher cargo volumes.

A remote stand adds bussing time; a technical stop with no passenger movement can be much shorter than a commercial turnaround of the same aircraft.

What Is the Critical Path?

Turnaround planning identifies the longest chain of dependent tasks — the critical path. On a typical narrow-body turn this runs through offloading, cleaning, loading and boarding, because the aircraft cannot be dispatched until the last of them completes.

Tasks off the critical path, such as potable water service, can absorb small delays without affecting departure. Delays on the critical path move the off-block time minute for minute, which is why supervisors monitor those tasks most closely.

What Causes Turnaround Delay?

  • Late arrival of the inbound aircraft, compressing every downstream task.
  • Late passengers, gate changes or last-minute offloading of baggage.
  • Load sheet changes caused by revised passenger, cargo or fuel figures.
  • Equipment or staff shortages at peak periods.
  • Weather, de-icing requirements or ramp closures.
  • Waiting for a departure slot or air traffic flow restriction.

Aircraft earn revenue only in the air, so turnaround time directly affects daily aircraft utilisation and schedule integrity. A recurring five-minute overrun on a high-frequency rotation can cost an operator an entire sector by the end of the day.
